Neighborhood Safety

The Board of Directors for Westlake Municipal Utility District 1 (Westlake MUD 1) is pleased to share some helpful information on enhancing safety in your neighborhood. While neighborhood safety is a shared responsibility, it all begins with you. So, what can you do to help create a safer environment? Here are a few simple tips to get started:

Get to Know Your Neighbors

Take the time to introduce yourself to your neighbors, especially those who live nearby. Strong relationships can lead to increased vigilance, as people are more likely to look out for each other if they know one another.

Organize a Neighborhood Watch Program

Start a neighborhood watch group where residents can communicate and share information about suspicious activities. Having a network of people who keep an eye out for each other and any suspicious activity can deter criminal activity.

Host Community Events

Hosting a block party or regular social gathering can help neighbors build relationships, which in turn strengthens the community’s overall sense of safety. The more neighbors know and trust each other, the less likely criminal activity is to go unnoticed.

Improve Lighting

Ensure that your street and neighborhood are well-lit, especially in areas that are prone to being dark at night. Criminals are less likely to target areas where they can be easily seen or caught on camera.

Strengthen Home Security

Make sure your own home is secure by installing locks, cameras, and an alarm system. Visible security measures can serve as deterrents, and neighbors who notice these actions may be more inclined to take similar steps to protect their own homes. Neighbors can share video footage of any suspicious activity.

Share Resources and Tips

Sharing security tips, safety guidelines, and local crime updates with your neighbors can help everyone stay informed and proactive. For instance, you could create a neighborhood Facebook group or email list for sharing important information.

Keep Up Appearances

Maintain the appearance of your property and encourage neighbors to do the same. A well-maintained neighborhood is less likely to attract criminal activity, as it signals that the community is active, engaged, and alert.

Recognize Suspicious Activity

Knowing what to look for can be one of the best ways to prevent crime. Suspicious activity may include unfamiliar people lingering around, vehicles parked for extended periods without a clear reason, or someone trying to avoid being noticed. Encourage your neighbors to be aware of what is normal in the neighborhood and to report anything out of the ordinary. Pay attention to unusual behavior such as people checking door handles, peering into windows, or even tampering with security cameras.

Prevent Package Theft

Package theft, or "porch piracy," is becoming more common, especially with the rise of online shopping. To help prevent this, ask neighbors to be on the lookout for deliveries and to pick up packages promptly after they arrive. If you can't be home to receive a package, consider using delivery lockers, installing a secure package drop box, or arranging for packages to be delivered to a trusted neighbor’s home. Additionally, using tracking services and requesting delivery notifications can help keep you informed about when packages are arriving, reducing the window of time they are vulnerable to theft.
