At the beginning of December 2022, Westlake Municipal Utility District No. 1 (Westlake MUD 1) was notified by the West Harris County Regional Water Authority (WHCRWA) that design work was starting for surface water conversion lines to be tied into the District infrastructure.
The WHCRWA was created by HB 1842, approved by the 77th Texas State Legislature and signed into law on May 28, 2001. From the WHCRWA website: “The WHCRWA was created to accomplish the purposes of provision of surface water and groundwater for various uses, the reduction of groundwater withdrawals, the conservation, preservation, protection, recharge, and prevention of waste of groundwater and of groundwater reservoirs, the control of subsidence caused by withdrawal of water from those groundwater reservoirs, and other public purposes stated in the Act.”
The MUD is responsible for preparing the water plant site to receive water via the proposed surface water meter when the time comes to do so. There will be no impact to the residents at this time, as no work is currently being done. The Surface Water Supply Project (SWSP) transmission lines are estimated to complete in late 2025 or early 2026, and the Board of Directors wants to make sure residents are updated as the projects are designed and implemented.
Information on the SWSP can be found at www.surfacewatersupplyproject.com. General updates regarding the WHCRWA projects are available at www.WHCRWA.com. The Westlake MUD 1 website will be updated as more information becomes available, and residents with any questions can utilize the “Contact Us” page on the District website.
